Transport Tycoon: Design Ideas That Still Work
Decisions before decoration
A successful transport business in the game begins with a clear decision: what needs moving, from where and to where? The railway is the visible result, but the economic question is what makes the route useful. That remains a good mental model in Deluxe and OpenTTD.
An evolving transport world
The appeal of the genre is not merely building a perfect line once. Industries change, towns grow and new vehicles can make old routes inadequate. A robust network can be expanded without rebuilding every station, while an overly narrow plan may struggle as traffic increases.
The value of a small test scenario
A compact two-town exercise is a better teaching tool than a huge world. Make one passenger route, compare train and bus costs, then add a freight connection. Save before expanding, observe revenue over several game years and review whether additional vehicles solved a real problem.
